The feeding of the five thousand is recorded in all four gospels. In three of the gospels (Luke being the lone exception) this miracle is followed by the account of Jesus walking on water. Each of the accounts of walking on the water tells us something the others don’t. What Mark tells us is this; They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
They had not understood about the loaves. No they didn’t understand. Later Jesus did the miraculous feeding of the four thousand. Afterward He warned the disciples to be on their guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the disciples thought He was rebuking them for not bringing bread. Why did they need to bring bread when He could so obviously take care of their needs for food?
When we see God move in our lives it is very important to acknowledge what He has done. If we don’t the result is a heart that quickly hardens and quickly forgets. But if we recognize and cherish each appearance He makes on our behalf the opposite happens. We come to appreciate who He is and what He can do. We come to truly believe the safest and best place is anywhere with Him. Fear is replaced by freedom.
