Mark 6:1-29

Mark tells us that Herod protected John. He had John arrested and put in prison. The he had John beheaded. So much for the protection of a worldly king. So much for worldly protection, period.

Yet, we somehow seem to feel safe in the embrace of the world. We have insurance in case we get sick or have an accident or face unforeseen disaster. We have a “secure” job to meet our needs. We have an IRA or 401k to secure our retirement years. We have a powerful army and police force to protect us.

I’m not saying that these things are inherently bad or that we should have them. We simply can’t really depend on them to protect us. All we can trust in is the unchanging all mighty God.

Psalm 20

(1)  May the LORD answer you when you are in distress;
      may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
(7)  Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
      but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
(8) They are brought to their knees and fall,
      but we rise up and stand firm.
