Mark 10:35-52

Kingdom upside down. Back in the 80’s a Christian artist named Morgan Cryar released a CD with the title cut: A Kingdom Upside Down. It talked about how the Kingdom of God is the exact opposite of the kingdoms of this world. The servants are at the top and those being served “on the ground.”

This concept is as biblical as you can get. We know it. We quote it. We like the concept, but... We aren’t really so fond of the concept in practice and we aren’t completely sure that we believe it. At least that is what our actions would say.

Nevertheless, Jesus wasn’t kidding when He said, “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” He wasn’t kidding because He reiterated it so many times with statements such as, “The first will be last and the last first.” He reinforced it with observations such as when He observed a poor widow placing her “mite” in the offering box and declared that she had given more than the heavy hitters with their large offerings. But most importantly He brought it unmistakably home by His life. For indeed, the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
