Luke 1:39-56

Verses 46-55 comprise Mary’s Song. It is also known as The Magnificat.

Who knows what Mary felt as she went to visit Elizabeth? The angel told her that Elizabeth was going to have a child, and this seemed almost as impossible as Mary’s situation. So, Mary goes to see Elizabeth. If indeed Elizabeth is with child then Mary’s faith in the stranger’s words will be greatly confirmed.

I love how God tends to be subtle at times when our nature is to be extravagant. (For example disappearing to pray at the height of His popularity when the people wanted to make Him king.) Then at other times when we are expecting something grand He totally goes over the top and blows us away. Not only was Elizabeth with child, as soon as Mary enters the house church breaks out and Elizabeth prophesies! “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?...” I’m sure they hadn’t spoken on the phone or even emailed about this. Mary had to be overwhelmed. And so, prophecy pours forth from her as well.

“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior...” All the earth would be well advised to pay heed to the things she foretells, for they are still yet to come.

...he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.

Come quickly, Lord Jesus.
