Imagine Mary.
Just having an angel appear to you would be quite overwhelming enough but consider what he said to her.
“You are highly favored. The Lord is with you. You have found favor with God.” So far, so good. Of course, one might quibble with a stranger saying these things but assuming she didn’t know this was an angel these were somewhat generic greetings. What followed was anything but generic.
“You are going to have a child. He will be great; the Son of the Most High. He will sit on David’s throne and reign over Jacob forever.” Every mother likely hopes great things for her children but this...? David’s throne was nowhere to be seen. To reign forever one must live forever. Moreover, the implication was that this was going to happen NOW! She had never been with a man.
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” What could this mean? What would this feel like? To suddenly realize that you had a child within you and yet this would happen in a way never before experienced in the history of mankind.
Oh, and what about her fiance?
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Wow!
