Matthew 6:16-34

If there was ever any doubt that the Kingdom of God is about the heart instead of technicalities it should be completely dissipated by this passage.

Why should we store up treasures in heaven? Well, they are the kind of treasures that last while earthly treasures are inevitably fleeting. Yes, that’s a good reason to be sure, but that’s not the kicker. The kicker is that we should store up treasure in heaven because that process will ultimately determine where our heart will be.

We should not serve money because it will prevent us from serving God faster and more completely than anything else. (That includes immorality and bad politics.) Our treasure will determine where our heart will be.

And perhaps the keynote of living a life of discipleship is summed up in verse 33. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” If we will do this then:

Our heart will automatically be in the right place.
We will have wealth that will last.
We can have a worry free life with all of our needs being met.

Not bad. Not bad at all.
