Matthew 13:44-58

After the great Parable of the Sower Jesus follows up with three parable couplets. One couplet bookends the other four parables. When something is repeated, when a point is made twice, it must be pretty important. Yesterday’s blog covered the first bookend and the couplet that instructed us that though it starts out small the kingdom cannot be stopped until it fill everything.

The second couplet talks about a field with a hidden treasure and a pearl of great value. They are both saying the same thing. The kingdom of heaven is of more worth than everything else you have.

The last bookend is the parable of the great catch of fish and it is teaching the same lesson as the parable of the weeds in the field. It is not our job to remove the sinful from the world. God will take care of that.

It is as if Jesus goes through this little series saying, “Remember, don’t judge others. The kingdom cannot be stopped and it is worth everything you can imagine and more. And oh yes, remember not to judge others.”

Ah, but He goes to His hometown and they don’t quite buy it because they are familiar with Him. I fear that often we are so “familiar” with the Jesus we think we know that we don’t get it either. The kingdom cannot be stopped. It is worth more than everything else we have. And... what was that other one now?
