Occasionally you run into a Christian who claims they don’t sin. If I feel led by the Lord to talk to them (otherwise there is no point) I generally want to say something along the lines of, “You don’t believe the Bible either.”
In verses 10-18 Paul is laying an Old Testament foundation for the proposition that no one does right. He quotes parts of no less than six Psalms, the book of Ecclesiastes and the prophet Isaiah. That’s a lot of documentation. Some would say, “Oh, but he is talking about non Christians.” Really? Where does he say that?
He starts off by saying, “Are we any better?” Just in case you think he is speaking as a Jew he follows it up by saying, “Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin.” Actually, when he says “we” I believe he is speaking as a Christian.
Is this bad? No, it just is what it is. What is wonderful is that “now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.” This righteousness is not based on the fact that we don’t sin anymore.
We had best remember that; otherwise we cannot walk humbly with our God. Otherwise we are given to “boasting” which is excluded and say nonsense such as, “I don’t sin.” What we really should be saying is, “I am a sinner saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.”
