Romans 3:1-8

Spin Spin Spin

One of the things I learned pretty early in life is that you can rationalize and argue absolutely any position. Hitler is a prime example. He was, after all, elected. You might say that his full agenda wasn’t really known, but whose ever is? In the end there were certainly thousands, if not millions, who bought into his extreme brand of fascism. As a matter of fact, there are still millions who buy into it today!

In the year 2011 the USA is going through some tough financial times. These times started creeping up on us ten years ago and exploded about four yeas ago. What is the cause? The national debt? (That’s the flavor of the month.) Greed? (The most likely culprit.) Health care costs? A decade of huge tax breaks for the super wealthy? Imports? Harry Potter movies? It can get pretty confusing, and everybody has their argument and the statistics to back it up. (Spare us!)

We come by it honestly. In Paul’s day people were saying things and following lines of reasoning that led to making sin a good thing. If my lying makes God’s truthfulness look even better by comparison then I’m really doing God a favor by lying. Brilliant! It should be a piece of cake to explain that one to God on Judgement Day.

I love the way Paul handles such arguments. “Their condemnation is deserved. Next question?”
