Mystery Babylon
The ending is at hand. The world as we know it is crumbling and the King is at the door. Chapters 17 and 18 are sort of a parenthetical detour showing what is happening to the world system.
Be aware that not all prostitutes sell their bodies. The worst ones sell their souls. Mystery Babylon is their mother. They ride a terrible beast and think that because they ride it they must also control it. Wrong. Those who have joined with the beast in trying to destroy the saints will themselves be destroyed by that same beast. He has no allies, only victims.
The political earthly powers will align themselves with the beast against the Lamb. After all, they didn’t recognize Him the first time He came. This time He looks merely like an alien invader. John himself tells us in his gospel, “He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.”
My favorite part of this passage is in verse fourteen where it talked about the powers of this world coming against the Lamb. They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings.
No other explanation needed. Nothing about tactical superiority or overwhelming fire power. Nothing about a campaign to win the hearts of the people. Nothing else needed. He is King of kings and Lord of lords. That’s all.
