1 John 1:1-10

Over 30 years ago one of my pastors made the statement that he had read 1 John every day for a month and it changed his life. I decided to try it. I read 1 John every day for a month and, yes, it changed my life.

This first chapter is so rich that instead of focusing on any particular truth I want to simply paraphrase it.

This is a firsthand eye witness account. We literally saw the Son of God, the Word of Life. We actually touched Him just as you might touch any person you know well. The reason we are telling you about Him is because we want to share our joy with you. If we could somehow bring you into this joy we have in Him it would make our joy even greater.

The main thing He revealed about God is this: God is light. There is nothing hidden about God. All of the dark hidden secrets that people claim to have about God? Nonsense! They may claim to have fellowship with Him but they don’t. There is no darkness in Him. If we just walk in open honest light with each other He is right there with us blessing our relationships and forgiving our sins.

Oh yes, we do have sins. Some may claim to be “holy” but they are just fooling themselves. Others can see their sins and for sure God can. If we will just be honest and humbly ask God to forgive He will! Not only will He forgive, but He will continue the process of making us truly righteous. But if we keep on insisting that we don’t need this forgiveness then we are calling God a liar and it’s our word instead of His Word that rules in our lives.
