1 Peter 1:1-25

Gold
Peter mentions gold twice in this passage. Here are a few facts about gold.
  • In all of human history there has only been about 350,000 lbs of gold mined. This would produce a cube less than 25 yards on a side.
  • One ounce of gold can be beaten into a thin sheet that would cover 300 square feet.
  • Gold weighs about 75% more than led.
  • Pure gold is odorless, tasteless, and non toxic.

It is interesting to note that Peter doesn’t mention this precious metal as something to be greatly desired. He mentions it in contrast to two things of far greater worth: our faith and the blood of Christ.
Gold can decay. Left in its natural state it generally does not decay because it is unaffected by air and water; however, nitro-hydrochloric acid as well as several alkaline solutions can cause gold to be dissolved.
Everything in this world is subject to decay because it was created. The poet Paul Simon has a song titled Everything Put Together Sooner or Later Falls Apart. It’s a long title but a true one. But there are some things that are not “put together.” There are some things that are not created.
These last forever. And chief among these is the blood of Christ and your faith in that blood.
