1 Corinthians 2:1-16

The Spirit

There are many different voices in the world all claiming to be the voice of wisdom. Some of them are secular, others are religious. Some are essentially political, others are essentially anarchist. Some are pragmatic, others are artistic. It can get quite confusing. How do we know where the wisdom actually resides?

The claims to wisdom may sound convincing, but that isn’t the acid test. Proverbs 18:17 says, “The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him.” This simply means that a strong argument can be made for just about anything but and equally strong argument can be made pretty much against anything. True wisdom isn’t really to be found in strong arguments.

True wisdom isn’t to be found by listening to experts. The rulers of this age, the experts and best minds the nation had to offer, determined that it would be best to crucify the Lord of Glory. That pretty much sums up where blindly following experts will get you.

Jesus said that when the Spirit comes He will lead and guide us into all truth. And so it is that true wisdom can only come from the Spirit of God. No eye can see it. No ear has heard it. No mind has conceived it. It comes from revelation by the Spirit.

That may sound a little too nebulous, and for sure there are many claiming to have revelation from the Spirit; however, the answer is not to abandon the Spirit in favor of human reason. By no means am I saying to check your brain at the door. I’m also not saying that there is nothing to be learned from those who have specialized areas of study. I’m also not saying to never believe someone who claims to have revelation from the Spirit.

What I am saying is to not check the Spirit at the door. Don’t be so confused by the many voices that you just throw up your hands and follow whoever sounds the most “convincing”, or looks the most “spiritual”. God will speak to you. He has sent His Spirit to live in you. You just need to pay attention, for you have the mind of Christ.
