John 14:1-14

Some Crazy Things Jesus Said

That is the title of a new blog I am thinking of starting. (But probably not until after I finish the It's In There Somewhere New Testament series.) Before anyone gets too bent out of shape let me remind you of some crazy things that others have said. “The earth revolves around the Sun. - Copernicus “You can reach the East by sailing West.” - Columbus. “It is possible for man to fly.” - The Wright Brothers. Of course the idea is that not everything that sounds crazy is. Sometimes it is everyone else who is truly crazy and the crazy talk is actually truth.

I have mentioned before that no one ever spoke the way Jesus spoke, either before or since. That is only partially right. The only people who ever spoke the way Jesus spoke are crazy people. No, seriously, people who are psychotic.

Those are the kind of people who may claim to be going away to prepare a place for us in the Father’s House. What would you think if one of your friends were to start telling you in all seriousness, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”? Oh, and don’t forget, “No one comes to the Father except through me.” Let’s make the safe assumption that in speaking of the Father Jesus was literally talking about God. How would you react to a friend saying with deepest conviction, “Anyone who has seen me has seen God”?

These are not the words of a sane person. They are the words of a genuinely crazy person. Or... there is one other possibility. They could also be the words of the only begotten Son of God.

I have to smile when I hear people say that Jesus never really claimed to be God. They’re crazy. You can say that He was insane, but you can’t say that He never claimed to be God. He sure talked like He thought He was God. And I’m just crazy enough to believe Him.
