Do You Believe in Miracles?
The Jews were asking Jesus to tell them plainly if He was the Christ. He already had but they didn’t believe. The reception of the message says much more about the receiver of the message than it does about the bringer of the message. There are those who have believed the gospel even when it came from an unworthy messenger. There have been other who refused to believe even when the Messenger was God Himself.
Jesus pointed them toward the miracles He did to help them believe. This is somewhat curious because Jesus rarely performed miracles with that intent. At the tomb of Lazarus He made it a point to perform a miracle so that those present would believe that God sent Him, but that was the exception rather than the rule. Often He instructed those who witnessed or received His miracles to keep quiet.
Miracles are things that amaze us. Certainly Jesus did quite a number of miracles; however, there have been many who have done great miracles and they have not all been from God; not by a long shot. In fact, the Bible tells us that in the last days one of the signs of the Beast (who receives his authority from the devil) is that he performs great signs and wonders. But the only thing miracles should do is get our attention. Once we are paying attention the real question becomes, “What are they selling?” If they are bringing the Truth then believe. If they are bringing anything else have nothing to do with them.
Jesus is the Truth. Finally, some of them got it. They remembered John the Baptist. They said, “Though John never performed a miraculous sign, all that John said about this man was true.” Then they put their faith in Jesus.
