Sliver and Gold
Back in the wild and wooly charismaniac days of the 70’s (and even early 80’s) we used to sing a little children’s chorus about this passage.
Peter and John went to pray.
They met a lame man on the way.
He stuck out his palm, and asked for an alm,
And this is what Peter did say.
Silver and gold have I none,
But such as I have give I thee,
In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
Then the fun started as everyone would jump around as they sang the chorus:
Walking and leaping and praising God
Walking and leaping and praising God
In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
Now,imagine what might have happened if Peter and John had been carrying any money. They could have just thrown a coin or two into the guy’s cup and been on their way. And we would never have had this fun song, not to mention that this guy would not have been healed.
I’m not saying that we should not give money to people in need. Nor am I saying that we are supposed to heal everyone lame person we see. What I am saying is that we should actually try to hear from God as we go through our daily lives instead of operating on auto pilot.
I’m also saying that I think it would be great if we would be willing to sing more simple songs that teach us the Word and get us jumping around like little children more often. We can give thanks that we aren’t lame and can jump.
