Matthew 22:23-45

Next is was the Sadducees’ turn to try and trap Jesus with a clever question. They create an elaborate scenario where a woman is married to each of seven brothers but has children by none of them. Whose wife will she be in the resurrection? The point being that they didn’t believe in the resurrection of the body.

Jesus’ initial reply to them is one we should well take to heart. “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.” After a brief enlightenment on their trick question He closed with a haymaker to the glass jaw of their theology. Over 400 years after Abraham died God identified Himself as Abraham’s God. Had they never considered that the Lord is the God of the living?

The passage ends with Jesus asking a question. On the surface it may seem to be a trick question to make them look foolish but it was nothing of the sort. Whose son is the Christ? The Son of David? Yes. But also consider that David calls Him “Lord.” Followed to its logical conclusion this would mean that One born of David’s line could also be... God. Too bad they didn’t follow this to its logical conclusion.

When God presents us with a proposition or question it is never to make us look foolish. That is one thing we are quite capable of doing without His help. No, it is intended to lead us to life. How often are we in error because we do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
