Mark 4:21-41

“With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.”

This is a good life verse. (A life verse being one that is foundational to the way you approach life.) A companion verse to this one is Matthew 5:7  “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” The verse in Matthew is more limited in scope but it is the same principle.

King David is a prime example of one who was shown great mercy. He did commit adultery and hired a hit on Uriah to try and cover up his sin. That’s some really bad stuff, yet he is still considered one of the greatest men to ever live. Why? Well, there are a number of reasons for his greatness but there is one prime reason why his sin did not destroy his reputation - mercy. If you follow David’s career you will see him showing mercy time after time to everyone from Saul who tried to kill him to Shimei who cursed and threw rocks at him when he was running from Absalom. And, yes, he was ready to forgive Absalom as well.

So, whatever measure we use will be measured out to us. If we are merciful we will find mercy. If we are generous we will find generosity. If we love we will find love. Kind, kindness. Faithful, faithfulness. And on it goes. You reap what you sow. It’s a good life verse.
