Mark 1:21-45

Jesus spoke with authority. This was a quality that would have also impressed the Roman mind. It still impresses. The voice of authority rarely has to yell or be raised. The voice of true authority never sounds threatened. The voice of authority is level, calm, and certain. When it comes on to the scene all other voices stop.

This is one of the reasons why Jesus would command the demons to be quiet. The evil spirits recognized Him and spoke the truth about who He was but He would silence them. Why?

First of all, as was just said it was not their time to speak. When God speaks it is time to listen, not time to talk. Evil spirits are still trying to create such a cacophony of noise to try and drown out, or at least confuse, the voice of God. God won’t allow it but too often we do allow it.

The second reason why Jesus refused to allow the evil spirits to declare who He was is because by doing so they were trying to validate their own powers. “We can reveal who He is!” They were also trying to dictate the pace and force Him to minister on their terms as if they were in charge. They were not in charge. He was. Furthermore, they had no true validity and He will not share His with them.

“Be still! And know that I am God.”
