Life is fast and varied. These 21 verses run an amazing gamut of events and reactions.
A man comes asking Jesus to raise his dead daughter. Wow. A woman sneaks up to touch Jesus’ garment and is healed. Two blind men come asking for mercy but obviously don’t get it without persistence. A demon is driven out.
Some people laughed at Him. Some people marveled at Him. Some accused Him of being in league with the devil. (This last group were the “experts.”)
Add to this the travel and the preaching, both of which can take a lot out of you, and what a whirlwind!
Yet the statement that grabs me the most in all of this concerns Jesus’ reaction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. This is God’s perspective. The dying, the distressed, the disabled and demon possessed; the laughers, the wonderers, the accusers. We are all harassed and helpless and in need of a Shepherd. That is how God sees humanity. May we have His eyes so that we can join His workers in the harvest field.
