Matthew 3

Individual vs. Corporate

Growing as a disciple in the Lord clearly involves a significant corporate component. It is in the company of believers that we see righteous example to follow and learn the rhythms of praise and devotion. That is where be find personal challenges to make us grow and personal encouragement to persevere. The Body of Christ is an important aspect of our personal development as a disciple.

Salvation is another matter. Salvation is as one-on-one as you can possibly get. In fact, it is the ultimate one-on-one, just you and God. Do not say, “We have Abraham as our father.” You cannot come to God for salvation as a member of a group no matter what credentials the group may boast. You are reconciled to God as an individual or not at all.

And so, when Jesus came to be baptized and John objected, Jesus said that it was right for Him to do this in order to “fulfill all righteousness.” Yes, there is a major corporate aspect to the faith but the faith starts one-on-one. God chooses you and you choose God.
