Jesus had just told His disciples that some of them would not taste death before they saw the Son of Man coming in His kingdom. Six days later that very thing happened for Peter, James, and John.
Jesus took them up on a high mountain and there He was transfigured into a blazing white light. Moses and Elijah both appeared and somehow the disciples knew them. The very voice of God came out of a cloud and proclaimed that Jesus was His Son and that He was pleased with Him. It was pretty intense stuff and the disciples were terrified.
It all sounds so... cool. What a wonderful thing to see. But they were terrified. Think of that. My parents used to sing a song called “Oh I Want to See Him.” In truth every believer has this desire to see, really see, our Lord, But just as some things are so cold they are hot to the touch, and just as joy can be so overwhelming that it brings tears, so also some things can be so wonderful that they are terrifying.
No wonder Paul later wrote to the church at Thessalonica and said that the Lord Jesus would be revealed from heaven with blazing fire. That those who do not know Him will be shut out from His presence and from the majesty of His power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed.
It is a terrifying thing to see the Living God. Nevertheless, oh I want to see Him.
