Hebrews 3:1-19

Free Beer

Margaret and I lived in Zimbabwe from 1985 to 1988. I well remember one night going out to eat with another couple and as we walked down the street seeing a somewhat intriguing sign. The sign simply said, in bold letters, “FREE BEER”. None of use were actually beer drinkers but this sounded like a too-good-to-be-true offer so we crossed the street simply to check it out. Sure enough there was a catch. The offer of free beer was no doubt sincere, but so was the fine print. In small letters beneath the bold offering was one word - “tomorrow”.

“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” This admonition is reminiscent of Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians, “Now is the time of God’s favor, today is the day of salvation.” When we hear God’s voice we can either accept it or harden our hearts. In either event, today is the only time we may do this.

It isn’t that we have no promise of tomorrow. The truth is that tomorrow is merely a concept in our minds. Tomorrow never comes because it is always tomorrow. Saturday comes. Sunday comes. Monday comes. But tomorrow never comes.

“Sin’s deceitfulness” would have us believe that we can wait until some mythical tomorrow. That will be the day when you can go to Zimbabwe for free beer. The truth is we can only respond to God today.

Ronnie, I cant tell you enough, how important these words meant to my searching and weak spirit. I dont say weak as in not of Jesus maybe I should use the word Worn out with the circumstances of Hospice and things in my life. Its so amazing as I was on my knees calling out to the Lord last night needing Favor of acceptance to continue to go down this windey road of Hospice, and all the above. And wow, God just revealed so many things to me, including this. So again Thank you for your words. I believe that They were sent from God to You to ME!! God Bless You Brother!
