2 Timothy 4:1-22

The Age of Itching Ears

“For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”

What sort of things might these itching ears want to hear? Here are a few suggestions.

Itching ears might want to hear that God wants us to be rich in this world’s goods. They may want to be taught that God wants them to always have the very very best. They might want to ear that materialism is next to godliness and a sign of God’s favor.

Itching ears might want to hear that believers are never supposed to be sick or experience suffering. They might want to hear that while Paul left Trophimus sick in Miletus that was only because he had not received the revelation of Devine health we have now.

Itching ears might want to hear that all of the problems in the world are the result of other people’s failures. If it weren’t for the liberals. If it weren’t for the immigrants. If it weren’t for the radicals. If it weren’t for the unbelievers. If it weren’t for the hippies, or the punks, or the rappers, or the homosexuals. If it weren’t for all of those people who are not like me then God would be pleased with the world. If we could just get rid of that speck in the other fellow’s eye.

Itching ears might want to even hear that the problem is the church. If you just get away from the church then you can really follow Jesus instead of being dragged down by all of these phonies in the pews and pulpits.

That’s just the beginning. There are a lot of things itching ears are...well, itching to hear. Man can scratch that itch but only Jesus can cure it.
