Three Things
In later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. What marks these deceptive teachings? The people who do the teaching are not sincere. Of course a person can be sincerely wrong but I think we are pretty clearly in an age where insincerity is flaunted and people tend to simply overlook and discount it. Don’t! Also these deceptive teachings are marked by instructions intended to control people’s lives. They strip people of free will and command the weirdest things. Weird commands should be a BIG RED FLAG.
For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. The Bible is by no means against physical training; however, this verse puts it in perspective. It is surprising how many people don’t know this is in the Bible. It makes perfect sense. No matter what you do with diet and exercise to keep in shape you will ultimately lose it because it is just a physical thing. Godliness last forever.
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. In our fellowship we are making a concerted effort to join the generations in all areas of ministry. We need each other. The youth need the wisdom and lessons of the aged. The aged need the energy and enthusiasm of the young. Both need the vision of the other. Respect flows both ways. The young are not despised and the old are respected. We aren’t batting a thousand but we want to be.
These three things are by no means all the instruction and treasure in this passage but they are what the Spirit would have me emphasize today. Read it for yourself with the question, “If I were writing 350 words about this what would the Spirit have me emphasize?”
