John 9:1-17

The Man Born Blind (part 1)

The disciples said an interesting thing. “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” We have to have an answer for everything. If this happened then what caused it? Often we even have a supply of answers in tow that we are willing to accept. Sometimes the answer is, “None of the above.” To the disciples’ credit they were apparently willing to accept that even some seemingly bad things can sometimes exist in order to bring glory to God. That is a worthy cause.

Jesus says an interesting thing. “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” In chapter 8 He had said, “I am the light of the world.” Here He is indicating that there may come a time when He is no longer the light of the world. What is the world to do for light? Oh yes, in Matthew 5 He says, “You are the light of the world.” After Jesus Himself left this world the light was to then shine through His Body.

The pharisees said an interesting thing. “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” They had it all figured out. These are the rules and anyone who doesn’t conform to their expectations could obviously not be from God. Of course, God always conformed to their expectations. (Not.) Actually, their God did conform he simply wasn’t the great I AM who created the heavens and the earth.

The blind man said an interesting thing. When asked what he had to say about the man who healed him he said, “He is a prophet.” He did not yet know who Jesus really was; yet, Jesus did this great miracle for him. Does God really have that much grace? Yes.
