Luke 24:1-32

The Emmaus Road

The road to Emmaus has become synonymous with having a personal encounter with the Lord. Let’s look at it a little more closely.

The set up is two disciples were walking along talking to each other about everything that had happened. They were talking about Jesus. They talked about His death. They talked about news of His resurrection. They doubtless talked about His life. In other words, their minds were turned toward Him, not the latest from Rome or taxes or gossip of the day. They talked about Him and He came.

They didn’t recognize Him. This may seem odd but in addition to the fact that His resurrected body may have been somewhat different I imagine the last person they expected to see hale and hearty was the Christ they had just seen beaten beyond recognition a few hours earlier. Also, we often fail to recognize Him when He comes to us. Still, He does come to us.

He explained the scriptures to them. Did we really think the book was going to be left out. Jesus is the Word. The Word is Jesus. It is wild and wonderful and mysterious. If we are going to have a personal encounter with Him we are going to have a personal encounter with the Word as well.

Their hearts burned within them. Bingo! The Emmaus Road experience will set us afire, make us alive, and ultimately open our eyes.

We don’t have to jump in a time machine or even go to Israel to walk the Emmaus Road. Just keep talking about Him and draw near the Word. He will come.
