Luke 22:20-46

Failure

Most of you can remember where you were when you heard about 9/11. Those my age can remember where they were when they heard about JFK being shot...and Bobby Kennedy...and Martin Luther King. Some news is so stunning that you never forget when and where you heard it.

In this passage Jesus tells His disciples about the most shocking thing He could tell them. "One of you is going to betray me." How could this not be the topic of conversation the rest of the evening? How could this not fill up every spare moment of the disciples' conversation? Apparently it was and did; that is until they moved on to the crucial topic of which of them was the greatest.

Judas was there. He heard Jesus say, "One of you is going to betray me." Mind blowing. He knows. How can He know? "The one who dips his hand into the dish with me is the one." He knows. "It would be better for that man if he had never been born." How can He know? Really, knowing that He knows, Judas, how can you go?

“Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” No, you aren't, Peter. In fact, you aren't even ready to go with Him and pray for one hour. None of them are.

This is who Jesus had to work with. And now He has us. The kingdom of God must itself be completely irresistible.
