John 8:12-30

I Am the Light of the World

As I go through the Gospels this year I am continually amazed at the audacity of Jesus’ words. Who else has ever even dared say of God, “I always do what pleases Him”?

Who else could say, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world”? I am not of this world? No, He is not of it. Rather He created it. An artist isn’t of his painting. He created it.

“I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.” It seems that almost every word He speaks carries a punch. Were we to hear such a claim today we would think... I can’t even say I know what we would think.

“You would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be.” It literally means that in order to not die in sins we must believe that Jesus is “the One.”

Look at Jesus’ words as you read the Gospels. He taught with an authority no one had ever had before. Not Moses nor Samuel nor any of the prophets came close to this kind of authority. No one ever spoke the way He spoke. And as we consider this we should give thanks because we don’t have to be in darkness.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
