John 2:1-11

Water to Wine

Jesus’ first miracle was to change water in to wine. Why did He do that? Well, He was at this wedding party, see, and they ran out of wine before the party was over. That doesn’t sound like a very dire situation. No one was getting ready to die. No one was in dire pain or about to lose their house. No one was even hungry. They simply ran out of wine.

Disregard for a moment any arguments about alcohol consumption. That is clearly not the message here. What kind of God provides wine because you didn’t buy enough? Furthermore, what kind of God announces this as His “first miraculous sign”?

I would say this would be the same God who provided all of the wine at the party. In fact, all of the wine there has ever been at any party or on any table. The same God would also provided the food at the party and all of the food that has ever been on any table, or in any picnic basket. He would be a God who really cares about everything in our lives. He would be Jehovah Jireh our Provider. And since Jesus is His only Son and only does what He sees the Father doing... God turns water into wine all the time.

Michal was David's wife. I think we thought it was Abigail yesterday. Unless she was later. Like reading your posts.

OK, she was a later wife, as was Bathsheba.

My rabbi likes to say that, in full knowledge of the the long, tough road ahead, Yeshua's first miracle was to buy everyone a drink :-)
