Selective Hearing
We all have selective hearing. One of the greatest poets of my generation is Paul Simon. One of Paul Simon’s greatest works is called The Boxer. In my opinion his greatest line from The Boxer is the following:
All lies and jest,
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest. Lie. Lie. Lie...
How much more plainly could Jesus have set forth the future? “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” It seems amazing that the disciples didn’t hear and process this. Yet, is it really that amazing? How much of what Jesus has plainly said do we “disregard”?
Therefore, I can believe that Jesus said these very words to the twelve and all twelve dissed it. It really wasn’t something they wanted to hear. I also wonder how many of Jesus’ word are ones that I simply don’t want to hear?
