“A voice of one calling in desert.”
John was sent to make straight paths for the Lord. But what about the rest of Isaiah’s prophecy? Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God’s salvation.
You could say this was part of John’s job as well. The lowly would be lifted up to see the Lord. The high and mighty would be humbled to see the Lord. Those who had stumbling blocks in their way would find the way straight and smooth. Yes, to a degree John’s ministry did these things; however...
John could only do so much. He couldn’t really raise valleys and level mountains. How about Jesus? The Lord Himself through what He did brought salvation within reach of all. It was not out of the reach of the most humble. It was needed by, and offered to, the most proud. It cut through the thicket of man made rules and requirements that prevented people from reaching God.
John prepared the way for the Lord. The Lord prepared the way for all mankind to see God’s salvation. And... Our job is the same as John’s. We can’t make people see salvation but we help them see Jesus. That’s what I think.
